Suicide Prevention Month Begins This Week

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Join SAMHSA as we raise awareness about suicide prevention, remember those we have lost to suicide, acknowledge the many individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted by suicide, and spread the word that suicide is preventable and help is available. The theme this week focuses on community support, which is key to suicide prevention. Suicide affects millions of people and touches every community across the U.S. Parents, caregivers, friends, neighbors—we’re all, in some way, impacted by suicide in our everyday lives. This week and throughout the month, let’s focus on how to support our communities. Remember that we all play a role in suicide prevention.

Join Us for 988 Day on September 8: This year we will celebrate the first-ever 988 Day, a nationwide event to be held every year on September 8. 988 Day provides an opportunity to create buzz and raise awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This year’s theme is “No Judgment. Just Help.” We encourage everyone to celebrate this day along with us and talk to your friends and family about the 988 Lifeline, post on social media using #988Day, or do something to care for your own mental health. Get ideas, social media graphics and more at the 988 Day Digital Toolkit!

Save the Date for the #BeThere Twitter/X Chat: On September 9, SAMHSA will join the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s #BeThere Twitter/X Chat to discuss suicide prevention strategies and share resources.

Register for SAMHSA's Webinar on September 25 at 2 p.m.: Answering the Call: Empowering Communities to Prevent Suicide Among Black Youth.
