At DMH/DD/SUS, we recognize January as Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote access to care for those affected by substance use disorders.
Substance use impacts individuals, families, and communities communities across our state. According to SAMHSA, 1 in 5 North Carolinians with a substance use disorder receive treatment, leaving thousands without the support they need.
We are committed to expanding access to evidence-based care. North Carolina now has 96 licensed Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) offering FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and we’re increasing access to alcohol use disorder treatment through integrated services, peer supports, and trauma-informed care. Our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) provide comprehensive mental health and substance use services.
We’re also investing in:
Overdose prevention through our naloxone saturation initiative and purchasing program on naloxonesaves-nc.org.
Mobile OTP that bring care directly to communities.
Youth treatments, such as Seeking Safety programs, Seven Challenges programs, Talkspace therapy for justice-involved youth, and treatments for transition age youth.
Alcohol Drug Council of NC (ADCNC) Recovery Helpline offers connection and support.
Oxford House recovery residences.
Unshame NC, a statewide campaign to reduce stigma and promote recovery.
Support for veterans and families, including access to the 988 Veterans Crisis Line and NC4Vets.org.
Weekly Themes for SUD Treatment Month
Each week in January, we’ll explore a key theme to deepen understanding and strengthen our collective response:
Week 1: Starting Fresh. A new year brings new possibilities. We’ll highlight stories of hope, resilience, and the power of beginning again.
Week 2: Multiple Pathways to Recovery. Different treatment options exist for substance use disorders – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Clinical addiction care offers a range of treatments to meet you where you are.
Week 3: Wraparound Services. Recovery from substance use disorders is possible with the right tools. A safe, supportive environment; employment and legal support; stable housing; and reliable transportation can make all the difference.
Week 4: Treatment-Friendly Communities. Substance use disorder can affect anyone. Let’s foster a community of support and understanding.
Recovery is REAL. This new year, we renew our commitment to ensuring that every North Carolinian has access to the care, community, and compassion they deserve.
